When we look at how rapidly the structures of civilization developed, and how they would would decay over the period of 500 years alone, one could conceive that it wasn't just an asteroid that killed the dinosaurs 65 million years ago.
Maybe it was another evolved demographic of beings that reached the same level of human intelligence and affected the planet in the same way humans are now?

Given the rarity of fossilized remains and how new species of dinosaurs are still being discovered today, it wouldn't be too farfetched to eventually find a yet undiscovered intelligent being that's closely related to other intelligent ferals like the troodon.
