@Rosemary i understand why they did it, because it’s possible to set up and upload a level that would be unbeatable otherwise (due to a quirk in how the “is this level beatable” check works) but there has to be a better solution
in fact i can even think of a solution that would avoid needing key death but there might be flaws in it, i haven’t put a lot of thought into it

@Rosemary in mario maker, you can put pink coins in the level. once the player collects all the pink coins, they earn a key.
imagine there are three pink coins in the level. you collect one and touch the checkpoint.
if you die immediately, you respawn at the checkpoint with one coin collected.
if you collect one more coin (for a total of two) and die, you respawn at the checkpoint with one coin collected.
if you collect both remaining coins, all your coins are taken away and you get the key. if you die then, you respawn at the checkpoint with /no coins/. you lose everything you had before you touched the checkpoint.
