CoC Draft #1: Preamble
I'm writing a CoC!
The idea behind the CoC I'm trying to write is to communicate as much as possible about conduct in a space (online or off) as succinctly as possible. The model I've chosen for this is a CoC whose headlines and first line of descriptive text fits inside a single Masto post and can be skimmed to get the general idea in half a minute or less. The idea behind this is to make the CoC short and easy to remember and recall.
The first draft of my CoC follows.
CoC Draft #1
ZERO TOLERANCE FOR DISCRIMINATION & BIGOTRY.
Leave your hatred at the door.
TREAT THIS SPACE AND THOSE WITHIN IT WITH RESPECT.
Listen actively to and honor the requests of others; always respond with compassion first.
CONSENT IS IMPORTANT IN ALL CONTEXTS.
If you’re ever unsure, ask first.
LISTEN; DON’T MAKE EXCUSES.
If you’re accused of causing harm, either take some responsibility or ask moderators for help.
DON’T BREAK THE LAW HERE.
The whole space may be liable if you do.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on this first draft, if you can spare a few moments to share them. ^^
@mawr We've never been all that comfortable with zero-tolerance policies. It's possible that someone might simply not know that some word they use is a slur, or might not recognise that some stereotype they have is a stereotype, or that some behavior they've engaged in is discriminatory. I know we've had our fair share of "wait, that's a slur?" moments, and I'd like to think we've learned from them.
