I did some napkin math and estimated about 250 cars in just one of the lots at a mall I pass by on the way home, at just one particular moment in time, on a random Thursday with nothing special going on - probably about 250, give or take.

Cost of a new car in Ontario is about 33500, so that's about $8.4M of car in one particular lot, at one particular time.

That's enough to run ~25% of our entire transit infrastructure for a year in upfront purchase price alone, not counting gas, road upkeep, etc.

(I know not all of those are new, but they were new at some point, and I'm assuming the cost of a new car is likely fairly stable relative to inflation, so I'm calling that a reasonable hand-wave)
