Something about the way you phrased this makes me think of "jays" and "crows" as denominations of currency, and then I was thinking of them as a unit for poker chips.
Except they're still actually birds so they are _incredibly inconvenient_ to use as poker chips because they would really prefer to be moving around rather than standing in one spot.
I guess jays and crows would be the medium and large denominations, with peanuts for antes/blinds and ravens for the largest bets.
