Instead, a generation of young kids got funny feelings for sentient black goop.

Absolutely agreed. Which, like, when you think about it too much, you start to wonder "Did they queer-code a cloud of toxic muck?" which is KINDA FUCKED UP.

But regardless of intent, it's still a point firmly in the "Why a generation of kids grew up horny for monsters" column.
