have mucks fallen out of favor because they're technically obsolete, or because they depend on a cohesion of social circles that is increasingly untenable?

i can't help but feel like the first thing would have not even been a problem if there were still a great amount of energy behind them. code can be upgraded and modernized. social relationships are more difficult than that.

i wonder if the virtual world thing ended up being more of a gimmick than anything?

it's the part that's most conceptually interesting to me, along with being able to build/code your own things, but it also seems like that opinion is in the minority and people generally don't care too much about that?

@KitRedgrave Admittedly, that's exactly the part that got me to check it out in the first place, long after the popularity of them had faded (I only properly joined the fandom a little too late for them to be in their prime anyway - 2009 wasn't exactly the age of MUCKs anymore); at the end of the day however, I had only like three friends there that I could just as easily talk to elsewhere, and the rest of the community was nothing to write home about.

@Thaminga yeah. i almost wonder if it would be better served as an app you run 'on top of' mastodon or something else
