I vividly remember the Graeco-Latin vocabulary coming more easily to me when I was younger simply because it's all composed of recurring parts and fairly straightforward to figure out the meaning of once you know how it works, whereas the more "basic" parts of English have lots and lots of individual, unique roots with many different, sometimes blatantly contradictory meanings at once (given that that's where everything that makes the language tick is at).
