The notion of "They're only doing it for the attention" confounds me.

As a social species, we need attention like we need food and water. It's hardwired into our brains. The experiences of loneliness and abandonment are literally painful.

If a parent was always unapologetically telling you that their child was "only doing it because they're starving," you'd call child protective services on them. (Not to be confused with a parent who longs to give their child the attention they need.) Listen when people tell you their needs; listen with extra care to those who can't tell you their needs.
