I believe in the idea of a universal basic income, as it would give a no-strings-attached floor of economic stability to everyone. Yes, there's social services to help the poor/needy, but they're often insanely bureaucratic, degrading, and overly punishing of mistakes.
If I got free money (like the US$16k/yr the article mentioned) I know I'd use that stability to faff around a bit, but I'd also poke around, try harder to find something I like to do and is beneficial to society. That's very hard for me to do right now. If I could pursue that with an easy safety net, I'd be overjoyed.
@Mycroft i yearn for this tbh. i've spent too much time thinking about how everything could be just. better. even a little bit. it's exhausting and more than a little upsetting there's such a resistance to anything that could make this better.
