I might be perceiving this wrong but

there was a time in web development where we needed sprite sheet packers, minifiers, etc

and we now have big amorphous tools like webpack that are much in that same vein

and in the meantime HTTP/2 was designed around the idea that web pages are made up of lots of highly-compressible components and that we can download them in parallel without opening more connections

and I don't think the ecosystem ever really got the memo
