should I move to norway
[ ] yes
[ ] no, you'll be forever alone
[ ] no, gtfoba (gtfo bay area) somewhere closer

@aldeka out of bay area, maybe :( I'm thinking that too.

@ftl it sucks because my boyfriend and most other close friends are here and don't want to move (or they want to move to eg New York, which we won't do)

my parents would likely follow us to Portland or the upper Midwest, but not across borders. other than that, it feels like it may as well be Norway, socially 😛

@aldeka I guess it depends why specifically you want to move... I’m primarily feeling that housing is just so prohibitively expensive that it takes over everything. That’s a reasonable reason to move elsewhere in the country but not a good reason to leave the US... but if you’re considering Norway, you’ve got other reasons in mind.

@ftl /me nods

For us the motivating factors are housing costs, climate (CA sun and heat give me migraines), clean air/water, class stratification/social safety net, consumerism, and political anxiety. The first three can be well improved elsewhere in the US. The others... :/

I spend a not-small amount of time thinking about how my great-grandparents made the choice to leave everything they knew to come to the US. Of course, Norway was dirt poor potato famine at the time... we're not.

@aldeka The sun/heat seems like a top reason to move. It's one of the things that's a draw for a lot of people, so if it's a negative for you that's definitely a reason to GTFO ASAP.
