Advice I Just Gave to my new Coworker [1/3]

"A little advice I wanted to offer to you given what I'm sure must be a lot of slowly building stress regarding the projects that folks are dragging you into here:

The psychological definition of stress is the failure to objectify responsibility.

I mention this here because working as a developer for a non-technical company means being an afterthought a lot of the time. Folks don't seem to understand that what we do is challenging and takes time."

"When someone hands you a project with an impossible to meet deadline, that does not mean you're required to work unpaid overtime to meet that deadline. If you're forced to, ask for compensation in the form of time off later in the week, as an example."

"Nobody will stand up for your rights as a worker except for you-- and most managers and upper management types will stop trampling on you once they understand they are. Don't be afraid to speak up for yourself and set expectations as early as you can."

I hope that helps him. ;~;

@mawr I'm kinda surprised the advice wasn't "FLEE, YOU FOOL!" but what you gave is probably much more helpful. :| *plushhugs*

@green Thank you fren ♥️ *✨plush✨ hugs softly back*

This is a consistent challenge in non-technical companies, but the stress and requirements around productivity are generally much more manageable compared to a similar position at a technical company-- but only if you can gain the trust and respect of your managers. ...gaining that trust and respect requires a lot of careful communication... or you end up getting steamrolled and thrown under the bus.
