I'm two years late, but finally catching up on Wild Wild Country. I'm only halfway through, but man it's clear that even back in the 80s people had the full expectation for the law to uphold white Christian supremacy and not be applied equally.

I know that the sect went off and did some unspeakably awful shit (like, HOLY SHIT treating the homeless as a voting bloc and then sedating them without their knowledge????) but to me every escalation is the result of being denied equal access to rights under the law.

And it's depressing to see that minorities who try to do things within the law can be told they're criminals just because the dominant culture decides they don't like them.

I mean, same as it ever was, I guess.
