oh dear i'm thinking about getting a new backpack* and getting distracted by the ones that are far too expensive for what i need

if you have any recommendations let me know
- must be water resistant
- must be able to fit a 14 inch laptop (preferably padded) + a fairly large lunchbox
- current bag is 30L & I like that kind of size though could go down a little with better organization

* my current one is getting kind of ratty in multiple places, most of the water resistant coating has come off

still looking for backpack recommendations - failing that, tell me about your bag and why you like it, because I think I'm becoming a bag nerd by proxy

my current backpack is a timbuk2 spire
i've had it for about 4 years, during which time it's been my work backpack, my "one bag" for international travel, and my grocery run bag
latter two functions have been supplanted by my messenger bag so i can keep work stuff separate

backpacks

it has a lot of pockets that help you know where all your small misc. items are, there's a quick access zip for the laptop sleeve that I use less often now, and as it's a rolltop, it's easy to store items that are a lot larger than its meant to

the big problem is that actually retrieving stuff from the pockets is very difficult if the main compartment is too full

(also while some colours are currently on sale on Timbuk2's website for a direct replacement, I'd have to pay import fees)

@Dex Chrome bags are very beloved around here

@leafnoodle I like the boxy designs but also don't know how well they'd squish when empty! And since I'm not cycling, the style of webbing on the front of some of them would definitely be overkill
