food, slow cooker/crock pot question

so I'm thinking of getting a slow cooker. the ideal is something I can dump ingredients into, set a timer, ignore for a while, then come back and have food ready. is this how they actually work? what are your experiences with them, good and/or bad? I need information! (information... *information*...)

@green Excellent. Hit me up and I can offer recipes. Just be warned that if you don't remember to use a liner bag -- and about half the time even if you do -- they can be a bitch to clean.

@literorrery *nodnod* I will definitely do that! get recipes, that is. do you have any recommendations for cooker brands/types to get or avoid?

@green I can look into what ours is when I get home; I'm pretty happy with it. I'd be leery of anything that's __too__ complicated, but you want something that has a timer and possibly a probe thermometer to cook roasts and such.

@literorrery *nodnod* I'd appreciate the recommendation! :D

@green Adept checked ours for me this morning, and we've got a Huntington Beach Stay-or-Go. It's got a temp probe, high/low/warm settings, and both delay and cook timers. Really worth the money.

@literorrery oooh, thanks! I will have to look that up and see what I can get along those lines. may I continue to hit you up for recipes/advice as I fumble along in this direction? :)
