it's wild that dedicated GPS devices are still sold because in 90% of cases phones are way better and despite that the manufacturers never figured out how to make them not suck ass

I wonder if the ones for hiking and stuff are better

@noiob phones are probably generically better but the 10% is a big deal to a some people, and something that runs for 25h off two AAs probably hits that

if an eight-year-old design still pays off its shelf space, why not sell it

@bonzoesc I've never seen a GPS run off standard batteries

plus it's a pain to get map updates

maybe I live in a too urban area

I’m thinking of hiking & boating tho (lots of boating in my urban area)

@noiob there’s a wide range, from expensive built in ones that have external antennas that have complex system problems[1] to like $150 handhelds that float[2]

@noiob that's probably a big part too haha, they all seem like a new neat gizmo that's more interestingly complicated than a phone
