@noiob mac os has a lot of weird ui but this is the part i always understood the least

@tom @halcy the app is self-contained, you can run it from any folder if you're so inclined (or straight from the .dmg)

@noiob @halcy having all your applications in the applications folder makes sense though tbh

@tom @halcy yeah it does make it easier to find them

@halcy @tom what else? that's how mac os has done it since the fcking macintosh

@halcy @noiob a dmg is just a disk image. you literally copy a file from a disk image to your apps folder, there's nothing more to it

@tom @halcy also note that all the decoration is just the folder having a background image

@tom @halcy I think they included that feature in OSX because people kept using meticulously arranged thumbnails to put artwork in folders

@halcy @noiob i guess you could also just cp it from there using your terminal or use copy and paste if you're so inclined

@tom @noiob well I mean, I have heard of drag and drop but whenever i see this screen I imagine a random boomer off the street being sat in front of that vs one being sat in front of the same screen but there's simply a huge "install" button which does the same thing, and I suspect that one will figure out faster how to install an application than the other

maybe not by _much_, mind you, both ways here are perfectly sensible and you can intuit them but why use the one that is worse, even just a bit worse, and also have potential issues on touchpads and with accessibility? when you could, just not?

@halcy @tom I would like to reiterate that this is a folder with the program in it, not an installer. They just give you a softlink to your applications folder for convenienc

@halcy @tom also drag and drop on touchpads is fine, remember, we're talking Apple touchpads

@noiob @halcy @tom (that's more confusing tho... it's a folder that looks like a different UI thing - but also old people who are using macs have probably only used macs I guess? idk)
