Hey I have a question: How is GPS better than it used to be? Like are we updating the fucking satellites? Are they sending more up? Was there that much room for improvement on the device end?

I remember geocaching back when "a gps" was a bespoke device you had to own, and you'd be lucky to get less than 200 meters of error sometimes. Now my phone can tell specifically that I'm in the west part of my house. What happened?

@monorail well, my phone (Pixel 4a 5G) doesn't only support GPS but also GLONASS (the Russian one) and Galileo (the EU one), plus there's additional info by nearby Wifi SSIDs and such. Also while you have data your phone will automatically download info on where the satellites are so acquisition is much faster (dedicated GPS devices without data can take like a minute to locate themselves)
