It seems speaking French to phone scammers freaks them out. (At least the ones who, I assume, are pretending to be from the Canadian government.)
Guy with a bit of an Indian accent calls and says "Hello, comment ça va?" ("How are you?") His French sounded pretty decent but I'm guessing he wasn't much able to speak in complete sentences. Since I was so kindly asked, I responded in kind "Ça va bien." ("I'm fine." ...yeah I guess that's a bit of a lie, oh well.) Guy hangs up immediately, apparently freaked out by my basic French.
I'm guessing that was a government scammer by the French, it would make sense if they were taught basic phrases to seem more convincing, since most people outside Quebec don't speak French.
I've seen youtube videos where people ask scammers for service in French and they're basically like FUCK YOU.
It makes sense, who in India or wherever speaks French. They don't have much reason to. From what I've heard, in French speaking parts the scammers are usually from French-speaking African countries.
And I mean, don't be fucking racist btw. It's colonialism that's made people so desperate that they're willing to try to scam people over the phone in other countries.
And fuck, sometimes I wonder about joining them.
Though, I can only wonder what kinda of scammers, if any, there are in other countries. Are there scammers calling people in like, Germany, Italy? What countries are they calling from?
@noiob I mean, we do to, but since they call from other, uncooperative countries, who speak our languages, (thanks colonialism) our ability to do much about them is limited. You probably wouldn't last long actually trying to scam people here.
At least answering the phone for you might be less annoying then.
