1. Browser competition on iOS would be nice.
2. It probably would mean that Google would release Chrome.
3. There is a non-zero chance for Google to require Chrome when using YouTube, GMail, even Google Search.
4. What we know about web developers is that they give a damn about browser diversity. If Google would only support one browser, cross-browser development would dwindle fast.
5. There is little to gain and a huge risk for monoculture. It’s trading one downside with another.

@yatil Google doesn't even require Chrome on their own dang mobile OS

@autiomaa @yatil yeah I'm sure, other than the system web view (which is pretty uncommon in my experience, apps usually open a popover provided by the default browser) I use firefox for everything

@noiob @autiomaa I’m talking about requiring Chrome for services. Sure, at the moment it is advantageous to let users chose on Android, but it’s only 0.5% of the whole mobile browser market using Firefox. They could change their policy and boil-the-frog style make even those few people use Chromium eventually.

@noiob @autiomaa Google has throttled the ads in their ad network (almost a monopoly, too!) on other browsers to make them look slower in the past. They have many ways to make people not use non-Chromium browsers.
