what we did/do instead of relying on twitter blue checks

1. examine the profile information. find what correlations exist with websites and other accounts.

2. examine those websites and other accounts. see if there is any link *back* to the profile. (Mastodon's link checkmark system is very helpful here, as it checks for this backlink automatically.)

3. (for celebrities, major charities, etc.) search independently for confirmation via interviews, news articles, or the like that one or more of these accounts or websites are associated with the purported owner of the account.

sometimes all you get is relatively shaky evidence, but the thing about this process is that it does not rely on Twitter's blue checkmarks at all - and in the process you get a vibe for the entity's online presence that can answer other questions you may have.

and you don't get egg on your face because you thought that was really Christopher Walken on Twitter making the funny post.
