there's an art to asking questions *for which one actually wants to hear an answer*

to my surprise, it is possible get it wrong (and i can probably get it wrong too, but my introspection isn't perfect)

for example, if you ask "why can't emacs open binary files", you'll get a boring answer like "because it wasn't designed for that".

but if you ask "what's stopping me from editing binary files in emacs", you're off to a much more interesting path where you can actually address and overcome your obstacles!
