This is a neat feature but they really didn't have to style it after the iPhone calculator. No light mode and that ever-present giant mode switch button is wild

@Eramdam some maths has always worked in notes so yeah probably

@noiob its kind of hard to design a calculator for ipad which doesn't look ridiculous. best throw would have been an applet design, much like the calculator on mac os.

i guess this was the reason why the first ipad never included one. still, kind of embarrasing how long it took for them to figure out the obvious things.

generally, calculators and steve jobs really never were friends at apple, on the original macintosh steve jobs was upset with most designs which drove developers to create an application where jobs could design a calculator to his liking. :blobCat_shrug:

@maximemelian I've been using apps.apple.com/us/app/uno-calc for a while now and it looks really nice, it resizes well and it has a light and dark mode so no, I don't think it's hard to design a good-looking calculator

@noiob yup, pcalc was an obvious choice for me, as its a veteran app on mac os, handwriting to calculator never really was something i strived to have.

alas, finally no one has to buy or install an third party app for calculations.

@noiob hot take and lightweight metal headwear thoughts are that microsoft math solver was considered an serious competitor to... spotlight search on ipad os for basic mathematics? microsoft math solver is basically what you now get with the new calculator. apple sherlocked many apps this year.

@maximemelian never heard of microsoft math solver but there have been so many handwriting-to-calculator apps over the years 🤷
