Looking at international train travel makes me depressed. It's just so expensive a lot of the time. I thought about going to France to visit friends but most of the connections, that aren't too bad, cost like 270€ for both ways. Which adds up if you wanna go with a partner and now it's suddenly 540€ just for travelling there alone. At this point it could be cheaper to ask for a car and drive conservatively or even fly. Interrail might work but getting a reservation every time could get expensive
@kadse yeah if someone else pays for things they're cheaper :P
@noiob :p something something fortunate cat
@noiob @kadse well, if I use my standard way of driving a car (rent one)
I can drive the whole day and go 2500km for still less than 550€
that is INCLUDING everything like taxes, gas and upkeep
(well, there's a monthly fee, but I've selected the cheapest option there, resulting in slightly higher prices per km)
No train should ever be more expensive than renting a car!
@drazraeltod @kadse don't get me wrong, I think train travel should be as cheap as possible
@noiob @kadse didn't imply you said something different
just saying: even with upkeep cars are still way to cheap - or trains are too expensive - or both
I mean, I'd still go by train to france, simply because I wouldn't want to drive 1000+km myself.
But economically? that's a hard sell!
There's something ridiculously broken!
@noiob indeed but if i'm just yoinking it from nearby family the cost doesn't really matter to me? i guess it's not the situation most people are in, but meow
