does anyone know when the etymological shift from dragoons (i.e. soldiers who carry a dragon gun) to fantasy dragoons who either ride or fight dragons happened?

did they just translate Ryukishi (dragon knight) as Dragoon because it sounds good

@noiob Also how did we get from either of those to Final Fantasy Dragoon (spear fighter with ten foot vertical leap)

@hache spears are traditionally how you fight dragons (e.g. Siegfried) and how else are they gonna reach them
