it's funny how the progression of lighting technology (simplified) was basically:

  • thing that just lights up when powered, but also gets hot
  • thing that requires very finicky technology to create an ionised channel of gas and constantly imbue energy to create light, but also needs to be controlled carefully since otherwise the wrong power levels will break it either physically or just not light it up
  • thing that just lights up when powered, but doesn't get very hot

@clarfonthey pretty sure LEDs, being semiconductors, are also quite finicky

@clarfonthey now that I think of it, getting a wire to glow white without immediately combusting isn't that easy either so I think it balances out

I wonder where arc lamps fit in this, they're kind of the "fuck it we ball" of lighting technologies
