A lot of fediverse instances use AWS for storage?
"Decentralized" social network
What even is the point if it all gets stored on the same computers in the cloud, anyway?
@onfy At least it gets stored on a different cloud service, I guess?
@vaporeon_ @onfy awoo's media storage is roughly 260 gigabytes, we could self-host that. That's mostly our own data, we (and most instances, I think) delete remote data after a period (90 days for us bc Wasabi will bill us for 90 days anyways)
@noiob @vaporeon_ yeah that's also a reason mastodon is so... well bad
@onfy @vaporeon_ I mean it has to store all the posts. that's kind of a fundamental feature
@noiob @vaporeon_ posts are that big compared to pngs? granted not every post will have an image...
but yeah you very won't be able to get around that! unless i guess you use something highly ephemeral
@onfy @vaporeon_ there's simply a lot of posts, metadata and stuff and it's all retained perpetually
@noiob @vaporeon_ again, the problem is the number would be higher if i was still on awoo ![]()
@vaporeon_ @onfy that said it's just nice to have media storage that doesn't have an upper limit. Mastodon is already storage hungry because it produces a lot of logs and a big database
