Mastodon Concerns from over on Hellbirb
@scottcrawford@mastodon.social That's not 100% correct. I think people are aware that their posts are public (like on twitter). Private toots are not leaving the instance they're on, unless they include a mention. There's a warning then
Teaching people how federation works should be a bigger concern, I think, because most of us (me included) suck at explaining it. Also for now all masto instances look the same from the outside, which doesn't help, I guess.

@bleak @scottcrawford@mastodon.social well, there's not much public info on how all this stuff works... idk. We don't claim to be magically invulnerable to the problems hellbird has. This is just a work in progress, after all.

@noiob @scottcrawford@mastodon.social that's a good point. i think some of these concerns will have sorted themselves out in time without any tinkering (which aren't framed [seen?] as such), but there's other problems that do need tinkering on, and keeping those in the public eye is more important. in any case, there is a sore need for these systems to be explicated fully and publically and with facility, this whole thing illustrates that well i think
Mastodon Concerns from over on Hellbirb
@bleak @scottcrawford@mastodon.social single user instances are only for those fortunate enough to be able to a) pay for a server b) set it up, or pay someone they trust to set it up and c) be able to configure it
I mean, whitelisting isn't even a public feature rn
Mastodon Concerns from over on Hellbirb
@noiob @scottcrawford@mastodon.social both true, but also both quite likely to change over time
Mastodon Concerns from over on Hellbirb
@noiob @scottcrawford@mastodon.social yeah kinda feeling like some of these concerns are valid and others are short-sighted. no mention of whitelisting, no mention of single user instances, and those two factors are, will be huge in privacy/security/user veritas dynamics
