I suspect it's not news to anyone here that the chorus of

That's going around is primarily working as a means of mass self-soothing, rather than an attempt at a workable explanation of the situation we are in.

Genuinely spent a while trying to work out how to phrase that without "stupid", but feels like it's tied into that narrative at a very deep level
Think trying to talk about it without engaging with that angle at all would be worse;- The core appeal is pairing a simple story of events with the innate implication that the reader is part of a [rational, calm, mature, intelligent] superior group
