DV, Abuse

@kitsch@witches.town I think this post is disingenuous.. It extrapolates out dangerously from "As a counselor, always assume that your clients, who are ongoing victims or survivors of domestic abuse, are doing their best"

to

"Always assume everyone is doing their best"

By this their abusers are 'just doing their best', too.

I've had that (*exact*) reasoning used against me, by past abusers, & their friends and colleagues who didn't want to see.

It's good advice- For a counselor, in a session.

@kitsch@witches.town I don't want to.. Pour bitter in the sweet here. But it's.. Saccharine, from where I'm standing. It can be used to disguise a lot of nasty flavours if you take it as an everyday mindset.

Assuming bad-faith all the time is bad. But so is assuming good-faith all the time.

Everyone is doing their best. Sometimes they're doing their best to hurt you, to exploit you, to silence you. Other times it's not.

Discerning that difference is vital, &.. There are no easy heuristics.
