@soft_chomps@glitch.social Have you played the older X-Com games (1 & 2)? They handle this problem rlly well, as well as dense foliage/wooded environments, which are something I wanna focus on.

It requires a certain aesthetic; It wouldn't work with the more cinematic-meets-realism style of the reboots. The fact that they were using pixel art & clearly drawn diagonal vectors overlaid on the terrain is key, and wouldn't work with a lotta art styles imo.
