@snailerotica @xenon i should add, they're noooot... technically... scams? but their advertising *is* under false pretenses and unless you're actively being pursued by Interpol or are doing shit that would get you in that position (or sidestepping content regionlock) you *do not need a VPN for anything*.
private VPNs such as workplace intranets are the only real use i can see for em. never trust a VPN unless you set it up, and avoid funnelling torrent traffic through one. them's my two bits
@snailerotica @xenon oh and they're also good for masking traffic on corporate/institution intranets, but said intranets often log and actively block VPN traffic esp. if the folks running it are really into infosec and/or screwing with people.
so while the transmission is encrypted, they can still see where its going and stop it at the gate. no good!
on encryption too: HTTPS/SSL encryption is provided by most sites and net-connected apps. plenty encryption. VPN cryp is just wasted cycles
