I’m really struggling today to deal with a relative in a mental health crisis. I’d love some input/advice from those experienced on either side.

@smallesttiger it's a really hard call to make and it's extremely rough that there's not a better solution but for me & terry it was the right thing. If you wanna talk anything through or just need to vent you can definitely hit me up. Good luck.

@angrboda it might be the right option, she’s been there before :/ it’s a huge mess

@smallesttiger if it's a case where she's intent on hurting herself or others, at least taking her to the hospital removes that possibility. If she can talk it through at all IMO it's worth asking what she wants (especially if she's been there before) even if you don't feel like she should make the ultimate decision. FWIW when this happened for me he agreed to go and agreed that it was the right call.

@smallesttiger something I used that I should have done sooner was calling a self harm hotline - you're allowed to call on behalf of someone else and they can give you info on what hospital to go to and walk you through whatever you have questions on.

@smallesttiger if you're really worried about self harm, the hospital is the place to go. It's a last resort and it sucks a ton but if this is someone who needs to be on the fast track to placement w/ a therapist / psychiatrist, that will get them there. Something I didn't know was that the minimum time you can stay in the hospital (in NY maybe?) for ideation is 72 hours, so be prepared for a longer stay for your family member.
