mob abuse
thinking about how chuds took the very real problem of vigilante mob abuse, and turned talking about it into a dogwhistle
also thinking about how effectively that ended up sweeping the marginalized collateral damage of the practice under the rug
re: mob abuse (longer)
@bootie_fringe so, there's a Very Bad website that likes to stalk and harass people they feel would be entertaining to mess with
one of the things they do in their stalking is try very hard to find things they can combine with malicious extrapolations to dissolve the target's support networks--networks that are often vital for their victim's survival
also, because these group have a louder voice than a single marginalized creator, the victim's platform turns into a recruiting ground for a mob to attack them, fueled by belief in the original malicious extrapolations as the original stalkers sit back and watch the fireworks for entertainment
however, a lot of lefty circles don't look down on this practice because people with enormous platforms scream that this is supposedly happening to them whenever they encounter backlash from doing something Actually Bad
i posted that because i was frustrated that there are a lot of marginalized people who will defend this practice in the name of "keeping powerful figures accountable" while the people who are hurt most by it aren't the people they want to hold accountable--it's them
and abusive people who realize this literally hunt vulnerable people for sport, because the current perception of the practice means that enough people will give them the benefit of the doubt whenever they actually murder someone using it
