i feel like i still treat this site too much like birdsite, posting things and yearning for engagement with those things rather than just talking to people and making actual connections and conversation

that said: how's everyone doing today

hii @typhlosion

I have some related feels, where I think y'all are neat and I especially have fondness for the golden age of everyone getting to know one another, but I also have trouble maintaining connection when chat is the only shared activity

I do a ton of online fiction writing, and I feel a part of the tiny communities there where we just use slack, etc, because we talk about the writing in addition to random life stuff

anyway, hi, I'm really glad people I remember are still here :D

@aprrrl yeah. i've been thinking about this a lot and i think the reason centralized social media is bad for online communities is still pretty bad when it's decentralized and federated like mastodon. it's not built for instances to foster local communities; the fediverse is basically just still twitter but fragmented

@typhlosion I definitely came into it thinking that the themes of the instances would make enough shared interest that it would happen, but you could also make connections off-instance. In practice my favorite instances are just the ones that are super-queer, and the instances that are all about an *interest* that is also shared by lots of cishet men are not really my favorite places to be, so I just tried to nab people I like from them XD
