the big thing that I think solidified from me retiring from D&D is that i don't actually dislike the type of game D&D is, I was just exhausted from the particular set of mechanics and how they played vs what i want out of a TTRPG.

and since then I've discovered that PbtA is very much NOT what i want lmao. i don't want less crunch, less defined rules, and more baroque turns of phrases, I just don't want the archaic racist fantasy game

I think the most fun i had with an RPG since then was Troika. I should find some peeps to play Troika with some day.

like when i finished D&D i was playing a game that was 80% homebrew, and it just felt weird that so little of it was actually D&D. and at that point i was like, i kind of wish i could be playing something with rules that *actually* do what this story wants, not weirdly shoe-horning other stuff in.

and everyone is very much into the rules-lite or anti-rules systems of like PbtA etc and that's not what im looking for lol

@lunalapin yo same, my tastes in TTRPGs definitely slant more towards “number go UP” shit over “community theatre improv session” flavor games. it’s why I want to try LANCER sometime, lol

@irisjaycomics yeah i dig numbers tbh and i also really just like verb + noun gameplay. PbtA "kick some ass" -style verbage doesn't make any sense to my brain. I wanna roll to attack with my stupid big sword

I unfortunately haven't really been interested in Lancer because I'm not really a cybernetics freak lol. I know everyone's perverts for that and i love them for it but its just not really my thing. If there was a mech game which was more like Metal Slug i'd be down.

@lunalapin @irisjaycomics There's a game that was Kickstarted and on its way called Hellpiercers that may be more your jam, then. It's based on 4th Ed like Lancer was, also states Lancer as an inspiration, and XCOM for base management. The premise is in a technomagical future we discover through a ritual performed on the moon that there is unquestionable, objective proof of the existence of heaven and hell, and furthermore only 144k humans will ever make it to heaven. Knowing this, we started slaughtering angels to use their bodies as arms and armor to siege the largest prison to ever exist, the demonic jailors just as much pawns in God's Plan as we are victims, to free the souls of humanity.

@lunalapin @irisjaycomics It's very much a Shadowrun meets Lancer meets Doom sort of setting. XD Sprinkle in some Bayonetta for flavoring.

@wifewolf @irisjaycomics god i fucking love Shadowrun, i would kill to get into a Shadowrun game tbh

@lunalapin @irisjaycomics Oh and @Draekos will be able to advise better than me but you may find some enjoyment from Eclipse Phase if I understand the game correctly.

@wifewolf @irisjaycomics oh Eclipse Phase is weird and cool, I played a little bit back in early college. Never got very far into it, but with the right group it could be fun

@lunalapin @wifewolf the only thing i remember about Eclipse Phase is that there's a very specific fetish cartoonist who did a BUNCH of illustrations for it, and that's how i found out about it

@irisjaycomics @lunalapin @wifewolf
Yeah having played some EC, it's uh... it's definitely interesting. Lot of cool ideas in there but I think the group I tried to play it with was maybe not the best at helping me learn all the mechanics.

But hey, fetish artist content? Posthumanist horror-scifi in space? Earth is a no-go hellzone?

We could talk about Hc Svnt Dracones too! (or 2e even)

@Draekos @lunalapin @wifewolf the only two things i know about hc svnt dracones are 1. the name and 2. there's a cyber taur on the cover of the book, so it's For Furries

@irisjaycomics @lunalapin @wifewolf
I mean yeah, the main writer is a trans furry. She's cool. I've enjoyed my chats with her.

It's a game with a bunch of weird unique design ideas and I so badly wanna steal the like...
"this game is crunchy enough that if someone shoots at you and it hits the cover, but WOULD HAVE HIT YOU if it weren't for the cover, you still take a bit of morale damage" design ideas that were dropped on the floor between 1's kinda janky design and 2's.... soft-crunch choices.

@irisjaycomics @lunalapin @wifewolf

oh okay actually it does have the best magic system I've ever seen. It's the Cuil Theory. Every pip of Cuil is an abstraction from reality.

for a pyrokinetic in the setting for example...
0 Cuils: Your thumb is a lighter, cool!
1: You can make a little pew of a fireball
2: You can make an actually dangerous fireball, there's a chance you accidentally turn a patch of space into pure burning plasma
3: The room is now converted to plasma
4: Your soul has become a tiny sun, spewing radiation and fire. You can return to your body after 10 turns, assuming it still exists.
5*: You blip out of existence, reality has become too fucked.

Pair this with Cuil Bloom, where Cuils in an area linger, so if I do a Cuil2 move, and you try to do a Cuil1, yours will ACTUALLY be 3.

Makes magic into a horrifying arms race everyone is scared of is so fun!

@typhlosion @irisjaycomics @lunalapin @wifewolf
problem is you have to deal with the rest of the game <_< HSD1 has a lot of problems and HSD2 is... mechanically kinda shallow compared to the 1.7 playtest I was in and fell in love with, but better for sure.
