what are the best games for nintendo 64? what holds up the best today. i have an n64 and im vaguely in the market for games for it but im not sure what in its library is worth seeking out
@typhlosion most of the best best ones have been re-released on other stuff (mario 64, ocarina of time, majora's mask, star fox 64, etc) but some others that come to mind:
- goldeneye
- super smash bros
- mario kart 64
- diddy kong racing
- banjo-kazooie
- banjo-tooie
- kirby 64
- daikatana is notable not for being a good game but for being an infamously bad one
- castlevania legacy of darkness is supposed to be pretty good but we've never played it
- f-zero X
- pokemon stadium 1/2

@typhlosion there was pokemon puzzle challenge too, which is one of those vaguely bejeweled-like things. we had the gbc version and liked it as a kid

@Hearth @typhlosion it's literally the N64 version of Tetris Attack
@typhlosion mario party 2 and 3.
@typhlosion do not buy the first one it is a trap and destroys controllers
@typhlosion and hands
@bug @typhlosion haha *laughing in big blisters on palms energy* :);;;;
@typhlosion jet force gemini if you like a third person shooter with a bit of collectathon added in for good measure
banjo kazooie
zelda oot and mm
mario party 2 and 3
pod racer, shadows of the empire, rogue squadron
smash bros
@typhlosion mystical ninja starring goemon
@lion @typhlosion literally one of my fav games ever made
@typhlosion Nightmare Creatures
@typhlosion Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon (Part of the Ganbare Goemon series, most of which never got translated)
It is the closest thing to a playable saturday morning cartoon that system has. I adore it so much. There's a giant robot in there who sings his own theme song. WHICH IS VOICED.
Gameplay is quirky and fun, with a lot of elements that would feel right at home in ocarina of time (which would come out a year later, lol)
Soundtrack absolutely rips, too, a lot of really fun japanese beats. Story is funny as heck. Honestly I should replay it now that I'm thinking about it.
@typhlosion snowboard kids!!!!!! snowboard kids
also 1080 snowboarding for contrast
@codl @typhlosion don't forget Snowboard Kids 2
@typhlosion Aminal crossing was good, conker's bad fur day is classic, kirby and crystal shards excellent
Basically everything mentioned already, and I'll put in a word for Blast Corps, a vehicle based demolish-em-up action puzzler.
@typhlosion Banjo-Kazooie is still the pinnacle of the mascot platformer genre.
Diddy Kong Racing is worth a look as no one's done anything quite like it since.
Perfect Dark is worth looking at as a historical study because it was one of the first games to adopt several aspects that would later come to define the FPS genre — fully voiced storyline, twin-stick controls if you have two controllers — but otherwise hasn't aged that well.
