Darmok and Steve at the Movies

So YouTube decided that what I REALLY needed to see was a bunch of cishetero white guys gathered in a recreation of a 1980s era video rental store, talking about movies. Honestly it was my fault for being morbidly curious enough to actually WATCH the damn thing, so I have to take some blame for it.

What struck me most about it, though, was how utterly constrained and narrow their thought process was. Everything had to be presented in terms of nostalgia - It was like this movie, it was like that cartoon, it was like this toy. There was positively no room for anything new, their entire language was smothered by nostalgia.

It was actually more than a little bit scary. These supposedly creative individuals appear utterly incapable of comprehending the world around them, unless they do so in terms of the money-making properties of gigantic corporations exploiting their memories. Memories those same types of corporations established via commercials and commercialization of their childhood.

@Phorm Wait, which channel was this? I already have a guess, 'cause I had a REAL similar experience...

Darmok and Steve at the Movies

@zebratron2084 I am ashamed to admit caving to the algorithm, or even that the algorithm suggested it, but the channel was Cinemassacre.

@Phorm Ah, okay, just a similar species from the same genus -- mine was Red Letter Media.

@zebratron2084 Ah yes. The distinctions are small, yet completely unimportant.
