that She-Ra discourse *sigh*; Parallax; birdsite repost

After this mess— geekdad.com/2020/01/baitworks- —I am now officially terrified that no matter how much effort we put into making Parallax's plot Queer Enough, some eager young activist will find something we simply forgot to do & play it up as if we've attacked the entire LGBT community.

I can see being disappointed your favorite queer ships were never canonized. I can see being wary of mainstream culture making it a bait & switch. I can see lobbying creators politely to start following through better. I CAN'T see demonizing a good ally like
@Gingerhazing [Noelle Stevenson, She-Ra showrunner]

And I really can't see any point in going on this crusade, just because a show that was made to entertain you is imperfect. It seems like a godawful way to show appreciation to a creator, and a vote for "if we can't have it done to our most exact ideological specs, don't do it."

Showrunners give you a gay marriage and you complain it's disempowering. They give you biromance and you complain it's not unsubtle enough. They give an openly NB character and you complain because they work for the "bad guys" in an intentionally morally ambiguous show...

If you look at your culture through an electron microscope, you WILL find imperfection. Everywhere. It's the moral equivalent of being terrified about that 1 insect fragment in every 50 kg of peanut butter. So ask yourselves...

Is it harmful in *practical* terms? Are actual LGBT people going to *hurt* by this? Or is it just not advancing the cause fast enough, with 100% purity? If the only harm it causes is upsetting the crystalline perfection of your fannish imaginative world... my sympathy is limited.

I just... I sympathize with so much of the anger behind this, but I just can't be this militant anymore. Kids, Auntie Rez is exhausted. I've seen far too much assholery and backbiting done under the banner of a "social justice" that can't be bothered to treat people like people.

@zx3 Funny, I was gonna say that exact thing about Entrapta. ^____^

@zebratron2084

Don't think too hard on this.
A lot of it has to do with people who feel the powers that rule their lives are distant and unmovable lashing out at someone they can reach even though the perceived slight is many orders of magnitude smaller.

@zebratron2084 Also, checking the author's bonafides: number 1, a dude with 400 followers on birdsite is not what I'd call a 'major community voice,' and number 2, very little convinces me he is not a cis white dude barking at a cat up a tree for brownie points. I know -so many more- actual trans women who find Catra in PARTICULAR a great character that I cannot take this boy seriously.

@zebratron2084 Also: accusing NOELLE FUCKIN' STEVENSON, who got gay sword lesbian married and -used a broadsword to cut the wedding cake-, of being 'predatory' towards queer fandom is ABSOLUTELY beyond the pale. I am LIVID at the mere accusation.

@hystericempress If it's any consolation, the author of that article is getting absolutely pilloried on Twitter and it's only the very worst of the Steely-Eyed And Very Serious Young Queer Cadre that's supporting him. Going after Noelle was NOT a popular move, especially among the She-Ra fanbase...
