family, xmas (--)
God dammit my niece tested positive. And she's the SMART one who actually got vaccinated and did everything right. Now she's in tears because she 'ruined Christmas" and mom is a mess because there's nobody to eat all the food she cooked.
They'll be fine. They'll do Christmas in a few weeks. I just... I kinda... this is why I hate Christmas, you know? It's just a bunch of opportunities for tragedy as people get their hopes up to unrealistic levels.
Just... dispense with this useless pseudo-Christian residue and VISIT YOUR FAMILY AND HAVE A GOOD TIME AND TELL THEM YOU LOVE THEM. Assuming you even like them-- otherwise DON'T.
I hate this. I absolutely hate it. Christmas has almost completely transmuted into "my yearly chance to see how poignant and tragic my family is as it circles the mortality drain."
Mom needs me. Otherwise, I'd be on the next plane.

@DifficultToTame It's just... it would be OK if my stepdad weren't in a really bad health phase. It just makes my stepsister's callousness all the more infuriating.
See follow-up toot: my mom's sense of humor is intact. That's all I really needed to be OK. *hug* But thank you, seriously. <3 I do have kind of an overactive sense of duty to my family.
Mostly because, as my mom and I were discussing earlier, except for my stepsister and her staggeringly bad choice of partners, my family has been REALLY loving and supportive and low-drama and we're extremely lucky...
I mean, mom outed Peg to my stepdad as trans last year -- with noble intentions -- and he, despite being a lifelong mild conservative and a little iffy on LGBTQ stuff, said NOT ONE WORD about it that was not 100% kind and welcoming. And mom has rolled sympathetically with EVERYTHING, from realizing I would never be a conventional male, to telling her all about The Empress* Of Mars this morning. That's the sorta thing you just gotta pay back with interest. ^_^;

@zebratron2084 You’re absolutely right - that’s such a precious thing to have a family that accepts and tries even if they fundamentally don’t understand. It’s not a bad thing to have a powerful loyalty to folks like that. :) I hope they appreciate you (sounds like they do). And I hope the rest of the trip goes well! *hugbacks*
