Apparently I've got a bee in my bottle re: Social Media Platform infighting tonight
I keep seeing people obliquely call Mastodon the worst possible platform, and say that it has such enormous, tremendous problems. It's really unnerving to me for a number of reasons.
First, the biggest complaint I seem to stumble across can effectively boil down to "What if your Admin does something you don't like???" - Which I just... I mean, isn't that what everyone's suffering from on *Twitter* right now? No platform is going to be free of this! Whoever runs your ANYTHING for social media may do a thing you don't like! I don't see how this is uniquely a Mastodon problem!
Second, everyone keeps talking about how Mastodon can't possibly work - How it'll never replace Twitter, and how it's just not going to be able to grow or flourish.
I've been here for almost six years, and it's been doing everything I really want it to do. I don't want Twitter, but federated. I want Dragon Style, and all my friends that I used to talk to on LJ.
Is Mastodon a failure? It's doing exactly what I want it to do so far, and I don't really need it to do anything more.
Maybe we need to stop thinking that everyone has the same use case for social media.

Mastodon is a horrible place and we're all horrible people for using it!!!!!

@Phorm I guess I could see that being a valid opinion about Masto Discourse if someone did a 10-second helicopter flyover of this place. In their defense, you can't even SEE the genies and spacecats and vector-sorceress dragons in that kind of nickel tour. Their loss. 🤷♀️

For sure. It feels like unnecessary tribalism for the sake of tribalism.
That being said, I apologize for the abundance of unnecessary snark.
This is where my friends live in my computer, and I don't like it when people talk bad about them, because I love them. I should gear down my own tribalism, though, despite that.
