He moved with some uncertainty, as if he didn't know
Just what he was there for, or where he ought to go
Once he reached for something golden hanging from a tree
And his hand came down... empty

Did I ever mention my favorite Last Unicorn character is Schmendrick?

Poor son of a bitch called something up that, while it was genuinely beautiful and kind, it was also so alien and distant that it could only break his heart. Participates in something beautiful and all he gets is the knowledge that he befouled something he was never worthy to really *know*. Because knowing it was just not possible.

Yeah, no identification there at all.

@zebratron2084 I don't remember identifying much with any of the characters (not uncommon; it's *very* rare for me to identify with a character in any media other than superficially), though I remember I thought the skull was *awesome*. the most poignant bit of the story to me was in the circus, when the manticore (?) gets out, and the unicorn tells Shmendrick not to run. "Never run from anything immortal. It attracts their attention."

@zebratron2084 and now I'm having odd--nostalgia? is that what this is?--about when I first read that story, the book and circumstances, and how much better I liked "Come, Lady Death" and "Lila the Werewolf." *shrug* but then, I'm an odd beast. :]
