Today I learnt that somewhere in the early 19c, a local shot some Eurotrash for insulting the Mississippi.
There may have been other issues involved given that “Creole” in historical New Orleans basically meant “a person of mixed Black and White ancestry who does not pass as White” but really I think i am just going to imagine it really truly was about nothing more than “what, fuck you, the Mississippi drains 2/3 of the fucking continent”.
@anthracite this one is especially o.O as the only river in Europe that comes close is the Volga and that's half the size *and* barely even in Europe!

Admittedly the Mississippi is not necessarily terribly *wide* as rivers go; the Volga's widest point is ~2mi vs ~1m for the Father of Waters. But they both pale next to titans like the Ganges or the Amazon.
