am i an old curmudgeon or am i right in saying that windows application distribution still largely lives and dies on zips (indie/oss) and msi's (corps) with the microsoft app store and various package managers being very niche things?

clarification: exe-based installers are in the same family as "msi" for the sake of this discussion (aiui a lot of them ultimately wrap msi's)

@Gankra No, that's about right unless you count things like Steam.

Partially because well trusting the MS Store seemed like a not great idea

@Doephin oh? did they do anything in particular or is this general distrust of ms?

@Gankra eurogamer.net/gabe-newell-righ

Basically the concern from a lot of devs is MS wanted a thing like the app store, where they take a huge cut and lock out other methods of distrubution

@Doephin @Gankra this is probably largely chicken and egg but listings on the microsoft store often feel *more* sketchy than their non-store counterparts, just because there are so many knockoffs with a ton of ads and so few high quality upstream packaged apps
