COVID / flu good news
Hah. So the restrictions from COVID *may* have had a nice side effect: we appear to have wiped out two subtypes of flu viruses. https://statnews.com/2021/06/02/pandemic-upside-flu-virus-became-less-diverse-simplifying-task-of-making-flu-shots/ . At least they're not showing in samples. It'll be a while til we can confirm, fingers crossed.
@anthracite (got in, but only because I had the link to the auth page saved in my browser history. Less than ideal :D)
@anthracite Quick question- I'm trying to log my other account back into dragon.style on the web, and the current page doesn't seem to have a login prompt anywhere?
Seattle sno update: this morning we had another round of snow. Except this time it was warm heavy wet snow. Result: Seattle is now a dirty slushy.
That was one heck of a workout walking through. @.@ The areas where we still had deep snow weren't so bad but the high travel areas are an ice/snow/slush mix that's horrid to move in.
Especially as I just had running shoes on
6 inches of snow. Plus side it's pretty, and it's light and fluffy instead of the wet heavy stuff we usually get. My (not waterproof) shoes + thick socks kept me warm and dry the entire walk.
Since this area doesn't get salted or plowed the roads are covered, lots of people sledding. And less ice under the sno.
Sno.
The dog was very confused this morning as instead of letting him out for a pee in back, we took him for a walk. And then there was this cold chest deep white stuff?!
*shove shove bound trot bound bound PLOW*
Also half the stairs disappeared..the snow is so thick we only needed to take every other step o.O
US pol, vent
So last night a Republican proposed a bill amendment about "not hiking the minimum wage to $15 during a pandemic". It passed 100-0.
to a predictable reaction about the Dems "abandoning" people.
Except the amendment doesn't do shit. Sanders minimum wage plan doesn't raise to 15 til 2024 after which the pandemic will be over.
please, please restrain the knee jerk urges and THINK about things before you react. Especially when dealing with literally conservative propaganda ops!
Heads up.
Tapestries (probably through its forum) was breached for emails *and passwords.* If you use you Tapestries password anywhere else, change it everywhere, *NOW*.
Source: the recent "Cit0day" leak, a leak from a black-market repository of stolen emails and passwords. See https://www.troyhunt.com/inside-the-cit0day-breach-collection/ for a primer. The Tapestries domain is in the table of contents.
Boost for visibility please.
Little Drummer Boy challenge
Took myself out today by absentmindedly turning on the car radio on the way to groceries. Turns out that 4/5 of the radio stations I have programed are doing Christmas music!
(If you're unfamilar, this is just "try not to hear the song Little Drummer Boy in any form before Christmas, no other people can't knock you out on purpose")
Microfic, late for Halloween
At first, we thought the trail through the distant nebula was just a asteroid, perturbed by the death of the star that had spawned the nebula itself.
Then we looked closer. And found a single trail, looping back and forth in a curved line that no asteroid would take. Alien life?
We sent a probe, with our best telescope. It looked, and found not a starship but a ship. An old, old sailing ship, it's sails torn, it's hull gashed and pitted.
A ghost ship, sailing endlessly through the empty night after the ocean it sailed upon in life had boiled away, and the planet itself burned in the heart of a dying star.
But curses? Are forever.
We don't look anymore.
us pol, election-related, note for folks in Georgia
So hey, those of you in Georgia (or can pass this along to folks in Georgia), there are about 40k absentee ballots sidelined due to signature issues and a couple of days to fix them. The race there is close enough for that to make a difference, so if you haven't already check the GA Secretary of State website to see if your ballot needs verified, and quickly!
That doephin (Phoenix-D) you might know. Sometimes NFSW but always tagged when so. More of that over at doephinad@dragon.style
