a sudden thought (spoilers for 2012 videogame FTL: Faster than Light)

In FTL, it's possible to end the game with a completely different crew on the spaceship than you started, and that's always struck us as a little weird, because who are you playing? It's not like the ship is a character who can complete the mission on their own.

...I just realized that one way to interpret it is that you are playing the /mission/. Maybe you as the player don't get briefed on the mission until the final stage, but the characters must have been, and you as the player represent those characters choosing to fight to achieve that mission.

@packbat This reminds me of the game "Tonight We Riot" (it's in the itch BLM bundle!) which has a great concept and fun gameplay (but horrible sound mixing).

In it, the player controls one person in a group of rioting protestors. More folks join along the way, but the cops are out in force so it's practically guaranteed some won't make it.

If/when the "lead" dies, another one of the group is randomly assigned and the player keeps on going. As long as one remains, the mission continues.

I figure FTL is like that, and I kinda love it as a change of pace from the usual "chosen one" single hero narrative most games have. And it's not that just anyone could fill the role, but there are plenty of folks who can step into it when needed.
