I am a market harbinger.
You know, it's hard to read the article at https://news.mit.edu/2015/harbinger-failure-consumers-unpopular-products-1223 whout imagining the writer trying to come up with more ways to insult people who are willing to try things that aren't just same-shit-different-label.
And yes, I am definitely one of these. The moment I start to love an unusual product or a favorite meal on a menu it disappears because of optimizations for market hedgehogs (my new term for folks who ball up and hide from anything novel, apparently the majority).
I am a market harbinger.
@Owlor @ElectricKeet There was a short while in the mid-2000s someone made a lemon-flavored toothpaste, and I loved it. Bought it and exclusively it. Loaded up with stock for when I was back in Singapore and couldn't get it. Of course it didn't last.
Turns out they were positioning lemon toothpaste for women and I guess not enough women were buying it?
Also there's companies trying to gender toothpaste.
I am a market harbinger.
@Austin_Dern @Owlor Lemon toothpaste sounsd _awesome,_ so yeah, we can be harbinger buddies!
I can list so many other casualties of this. The "Harvest Slam" at Denny's (back when Denny's was a common food option for me), Bigg Mixx cereal, chocolate-banana Yoo-Hoo, Infinity Train (and half the other televisions shows I've ever liked)....
I am a market harbinger.
@ElectricKeet @Austin_Dern Oh yeah, Infinity Train! And also The Owl House. Quite a few of the shows I like turn out to a) get incredibly gay and b) get cancelled, probably as a result of a) >.<
I am a market harbinger.
@Owlor @Austin_Dern At least we still have Hilda! ...if more is on the way?
I am a market harbinger.
@ElectricKeet @Owlor I can't even *remember* the last show I really got into. Maybe The President Show back like five years ago?
I am a market harbinger.
@Owlor Is the word "marketqueer" a thing? We might be marketqueer.
I am a market harbinger.
@ElectricKeet There's this assumption running through the article that if a product is unpopular, that means it's bad >.<
I'm somewhat similar, if a food item is commonly described as love-it-or-hate -it, I'm likely to fall into the "love it" camp.
