Pronouns!

In the year 2000 (*falsetto* In the year two-thoooousaaaaaand 🎶) and still hopped up on the heady rush of long-delayed teenage-style rebellion, I finally got enough courage together to start telling friends that I would be going by a new set of pronouns. Not to trivialise the efforts of "the kids these days", but at that time it wasn't so easy as plopping a couple words in a social media profile. I got a lot of pushback from my peers. Don't judge them too harshly, though—

—because the set I'd settled on were:

zie / zim / zir / zirs / zirself

What can I say? Every set had its flaws, and no matter what I chose, folks would find reasons to complain, so I went with what seemed to have the fewest drawbacks. This set avoided self-collision (each form is distinct), maintained compatibility with common English phonemes, held audible distinctness from existing words, all of that.

Pronouns!

A couple months into my pronound-redefining campaign, "Invader Zim" hit the airwaves and I gave up, settling for "she" because at least nobody could justify screwing that up.

I'm actually just fine with "she" and "they" these days, and I'm really glad at least some segment of our society has finally made it to that point!
