Why is "bananas" ("he's gone bananas!") the colloquialism for "out of control"? bananas are not that weird or out of control a fruit.

Now, durians, those are out of control

@Felthry Possibly it's a holdover from when bananas were a novel exotic food.

In the 19th/early 20th century there were also a lot of apple-based colloquialisms, like something nonsensical being 'applesauce' or a ridiculous person being an 'apple-knocker'. That's (almost?) faded away but it seems like a similar thing going on.
